Belle Epoque on lake Maggiore - Program 2
Day 1: Stresa, Art Nouveau at its best
At lunch you meet your fellow travellers and the escort team. Subsequently there is a comprehensive introduction to the Nostalgic classic cars and we fully explain the easy to understand roadbook. The first drive allows you to get used to »your« Alfa Romeo. In the afternoon we take you by boat to Isola Bella. There we visit the ship-shaped Palazzo Borromeo as well as the botanical gardens. In the evening you visit a culinary insider tip with panorama views over Lake Maggiore.
Day 2: Ascona and the Lombard shoreToday’s stage is right out of a picture book: an hour and a half on the waterfront of Lake Maggiore towards Ascona. The town became known in the Twenties when poets and artists started to hang out here but it always had an important role in the history of Lake Maggiore. You leave your car at the lake promenade and take part in a guided tour of the town. After lunch in the garden of a town palace we reach Locarno and the eastern shore, then crossing over Italy’s second largest lake by ferry at Laveno. The day is brought to an end in a Fifties restaurant with fish specialities.
Day 3: Rallye Feeling in Nature Preserve MottaroneCurves, throttle and the unmistakable sound of the Alfa accompany you this morning: the 18 kilometre mountain stage takes you from the 200 m above sea level Lake Maggiore up to the 1500 meter high Monte Mottarone. Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore lie beneath you, the snow-covered peaks of the South Alps glisten in the distance. At noon-time we visit the old town of Orta San Giulio and its cloister island, in the afternoon you discover a new world in Arona: one of Italy’s oldest cheese dairies located in a cellar vault. We dine at the only two-star Michelin restaurant on Lake Maggiore.
Day 4: Popes and SaintsIn the morning we visit Castel Angera on the south shore of Lake Maggiore. The once Roman fortress is home to one of the most significant Italian noble families. About 150 steps lead to the top of the peel tower and an incomparable view. After the tour you drive along the lakeshore, past the hermitage Santa Caterina del Sasso and on to Laveno. The ferry brings you back to the west shore and the hotel where you return the car in the afternoon.
